Personally I am paying the $10/mth.  Ended up subcribing through the phone last week while we were moving a friend (Montreal to somewhere in Trois-Riviere), so it came in handy.  I figured I'd pay the $10, rather then the 1 time use $3.50.  I don't so much like the google maps app, but have only tried it after I had payed for the subscription.  I'm curious if someone else who doesn't have the GPS service on their bill could try another 3rd party app just to confirm it works with everything.

I'm still curious whether the Bell omnia functions as a standalone GPS out of the box.  I'm reluctant to use Google Maps as a reference, since on my old Samsung A920 (standard phone) it had location based tracking only, and I could use google maps on it to locate me and provide directions, although not for turn-by-turn.

I think what you talk about is purely software related.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

My first post and the first topic I researched for my new omnia. I am on the Bell Canada network, just downloaded google maps mobile and the GPS function works great! Even inside the house!. And Bell wanted $10/mo for GPS!

Thanks all!

i have an omnia with bell canada and successfully installed gps on it.  there is no need to pay 10$/month for gps when you can get it with other software.

i currently have garmin mobile XT with 2009 North American maps running on it. flawlessly. with real-time, turn-by-turn voice directions (try that, iphone/google maps!) and im not paying a PENNY.

you can use other apps for gps, like iGo or :puke: tomtom, i just prefer garmin because i havent seen a better one yet.   to those familiar with gps terminology, it has plenty of points of interests stored, and even allows you to connect to google on the go to find the place youre looking for. although it doesnt have text-to-speech and the reception will never be as good as a standalone garmin gps, it beats the hell out of using lame Tele-Atlas google maps!  i work in a retail store in the GPS department and can promise you it has extensive settings (not even found in a 800$ garmin), and as an added bonus, i even have a stripper voice loaded on it...
