I hope they fix the problem with the screen coming on when you use your bluetooth headset.  It just kills my battery so i can't use my headset very long.

I just saw this posted over at PDAPhoneHome.com by another user and thought I would share it. Sounds like very good news, especially the memory reallocation and the GPS being unlocked.

Samsung to release firmware update in 2-3 weeks for i910

I was on the phone with Samsung tier 3 support today to address a very persistent issue with a possible conflict between Verizon Wireless Sync and the Omnia. The very helpful support engineer told me that Samsung will be releasing the firmware update in 2--3 weeks and it will address a number of issues:
1 - Change the allocation of memory to give more to the device vs My Storage
2 - Unlock the GPS to enable Google Maps, etc.
3 - Address power issues
4 - Adress misc sound and graphic issues
5 - Myriad of other issues

This is very good news.

My Reply from Verizion on April 21 on this subject. Seems to be a waste of my time, just Stroking me, hopefully we'll see better info from Samsung

Thank you for contacting our Verizon Wireless website. We regret your disappointment in the Samsung Omnia functionality when it comes to GPS being used with Google Maps or Mobile Windows Live. We are happy to assist with your inquiry on updating the Samsung Omnia.

We value your business and do not want to loose you due to the functionality of GPS on the Samsung Omnia. We are pleased that you decided to upgrade to the Samsung Omnia and not purchase the iPhone. We appreciate your interest in our data products and services.

The Samsung Omnia's GPS chip is used to provide the handset's location to emergency responders when placing 911 calls as are other Verizon Wireless phones. It does not provide any user accessible functionality such as location information for directions, mapping, or any other application. The Samsung Omnia is compatible with Assisted GPS (AGPS) functionality. Verizon Wireless supports AGPS rather than stand-alone GPS like some other carriers use.

We would like to assure you that we are committed to providing the very latest in products and services. For that reason, we rigorously test our products prior to launching them in an effort ensure they meet our standards of excellence. Doing so allows us to confidently address information regarding products or services that we currently offer. Disclosing any unconfirmed information that may be subject to change could raise expectations that may not be met. At this time, we are unable to state when GPS will be unlocked for the Samsung Omnia as no information has been given other than what you have stated.

AGPS uses the Verizon Wireless Network to provide more accurate, faster location information, in addition to better navigation performance indoors and in dense urban areas. You have stated that you are not interested in using the VZNavigator application. If you would like to use mapping software with the Samsung Omnia, we offer VZNavigator for $9.99 per month.

With VZNavigator you have all the features of an advanced navigation system right on your phone. You can get spoken turn-by-turn directions, maps, local point of interest search, and more. Please reply to this email if you would like to add the VZNavigator service to your account.

Was this a joke on their part?? "You mention that you don't want to use our software.... so would you like to use our software?" I'm gonna get me a lobotomy so I can work for Verizon!

Take care,
Rob

i once told a verizon employee that i thought vznav sucked ass and was the worst product i had ever seen and i'd rather take the 9.99 a month and give it to some homeless bum then give it to verizon.  You had to see the look on there face....priceless

If you register your phone with verizon, will they notify us of a firmware update? or do I just have to keep checking? Anyone have any experience with this?

I did the, how should I put this, "homebrewed" ROM on my omnia and my standalone GPS is working like a champ.  I haven't gone on any trips so my GPS sojourns have been from home to work.  With 5 satellites it says it's accurate to within 20 meters but it detects and shows me crossing the street to check my mail.  I like the new volume controls.  I don't really use easy settings.  And it comes with dice!

Samsung Omnia i910 (Verizon)

« Reply #22 on: May 12, 2009, 08:36:07 PM »

I called Verizon about the availability of the firmware upgrade today. I asked if they already had it or when it would become available. I was told that Verizon made the decision they would no longer support upgrading firmware on any PDA/Smartphone devices since this meant wiping the phones memory and any user installed apps. The rep told me they had run into too many issues with users wanted them to reinstall the apps and they could not afford to offer this service.
I was told that if I wanted to upgrade I would have to get the firmware upgrade directly from Samsung and do it myself. Got online immediately and send a message stating the same to Samsung support. Waiting to hear back....

I would upgrade using the roms available but here's the thing: All I really want is to remove a few (like... 3 or 4) apps from the rom I don't use and unlock the GPS. Other than that, I'm completely happy with my i910 now that I've got the apps n mods I want on it. Its seems the custom roms that are available change it way too much for my liking. Don't get me wrong, the folks who cook these roms are winmo jedi and REALLY cool for sharing with us I wish I could find a custom rom that is not so gutted.

As far as VZW's decision, lets not fool ourselves. It's all about the money they make on the Navigator. Nothing else.

I don't doubt you had that conversation, but I can tell you with certain knowledge that the statement you got from that employee does not represent Verizon Wireless' company policy. Most handsets, PDA's and Smartphones require OS software updates to resolve minor and critical issues with phone performance. Some phones have had 6 or more software versions, each one updating services or fixing particular glitches.

Opening the following URL and looking up any Verizon Wireless handset will take you to the company's support page for that phone:

http://support.vzw.com/phones/

I used that site to pull up support pages for the BlackBerry Curve, the Palm Centro, the Verizon XV6900 and the Samsung i760. All had links to software updates. There's no link for software updates for the Verizon version of the Samsung Omnia or the Samsung Saga simply because they haven't been released yet. When one is available, the link will be posted on that support page.

There probably is more than one representative in the company's tech support queue that has gotten frustrated by not-so-self-reliant smartphone owners who want excessive hand-holding through re-installing applications and data on their device after a software update, when those smartphone owners should be able to do it themselves. But that does not invalidate the fact that phones need these updates to correct functionality issues. There is no way that Verizon Wireless has made a policy decision to stop supporting software updates for their customer's phones.

Besides, that would come as a complete shock to the many, many BlackBerry Storm owners who are waiting on a critical patch to solve freezing and other functionality issues!

I’m hoping your right, did not truly make any real  common sense  if they really are going to take that stance. We all do back ups for a reason. I do them because over the years  I’ve had flip phones fix’s that have loose all my contacts or  had them garbled beyond reasonable repair. My MotoQ at least twice required corrective tweaks that did pretty much the same, no problem , simply ran the back up, reloading my software.  Angry

So if they really meant what they told him as new policy, guess I’ll have to start shopping for a new carrier. That would just be a major cop out. I’ve got some requests in with Samsung, perhaps they’ll give us better news.  Huh?

I know this is off topic, but what do you use to back up your phone?  Do u you use browse your phones files on your computer via windows explorer and then just copy an paste to your computer?  Thats what I did.  Or is there a program that you use?

Anyway, for them to not send out updates because it wipes the phone out is absurd.  That cannot be a reason.  When I had my voyager, one of the updates for that wiped the phone of all its apps.  So I highly doubt that's a reason for them not giving us a update.  I sure hope so.
