Hello everybody,

I'm experiencing a problem with my Omnia II that I really don't know if it's a real problem or just a particular setting on my phone.
Basically whenever I leave an application running in background, opening another one for example, I would expect then to be able to access to the first one using the Task Manager in such a way to run more than one application at the time.
This doesn't happen and when I launch the Task Manager I often find only the last one appl. running. This is weird because I would be able to leave my web browser open (i.e. Opera) while exploring my phonebook or whatever.

Please can anybody help me?

I'm afraid I haven't come up with a solution to this. As I look at my Omnia now, there are four apps running but I often look at Task Switcher or Task Manager and find that only the most recent programme is displayed.

For a practical example of this, I use Twitter to follow newspaper and sports news headlines. If I follow a link from moTweets, Opera launches and I can read the article, but close Opera and I find moTweets has gone too. Most of the time. Occasionally, it remains open, which is great because I can then scroll through the tweets for the next story I want to look at. Most of the time, though, moTweets has to be relaunched and so I have to wait while it opens up and goes through the signing in process all over again. If anyone has any idea how to prevent this, I'd be grateful.

The problem you describe was part of my earlier question about memory leakage...

http://www.samsung-omnia.org/general-samsung-omnia-ii-discussions/ram-memory-leak/

I checked the free memory often during use, via "Settings, Memory, Program-RAM" and got the impression that Windows was closing the backgound applications when free memory was running low and it needed to free up some RAM to run new applications. With the free memory leaking away this effect becomes gradually more noticable as time passes.

I've been trying to keep Skype running in the background and at first I found it was being closed after a short time with no warning.

One thing which helped me was as follows...

There seem to be 2 programs available to check background activity.
The deafult set up led me to use "task-switcher" (not sure of the actual name in English) and whenever I found unwanted applications still running I would use the option to close them from "task-switcher". When I noticed the memory leak I wondered if this method of closing programs was a possible culprit.

So I changed to using the other program, "task-manager", and made a point of closing applications from their own screens and not from the task monitor programs.

This seemed to help a lot and the memory leak is much slower now, (although not gone completely).

At least I can keep Skype running for several hours and still run other applications in the foregound.

Interested to hear other's experiences with this.

I've seen comments on this and other forums about the inability to run multiple apps being a big down side to the iPhone. Over the past year or so, I've had no problem running multiple apps (say three or four, though sometimes more) on my WinMo 6.1 Treo Pro, but this Omnia II (I8000) is not able to cope with the same pattern of use at all. Even on my Treo 650 (Palm OS5) I could be listening to music (streaming Today FM), browsing the Web, sending and receiving texts and e-mails (and viewing e-mail attachments), all while running Google Maps. Don't ask the Omnia to do that!

(I think my ideal phone would be a 3G and wi-fi enabled Treo 650, though sadly having two radios is something that Palm OS cannot cope with.)

My Omnia II is a 2 GB model. Looking in Settings, there's 256 MB allocated for Program RAM. About half of this is "Reserved" and a third "In Use" just now, leaving 35.82 MB free. Settings and Task Manager are the only things showing in Task Manager, though the Samsung interface is active (TouchWiz UI is off).

Do people with the 8 GB Omnia II (I8000) have more space allocated to Program RAM? My Treo Pro in a similarly idle state has 66.95 MB of 100 MB free, though of course it shipped from Palm with next to nothing installed over Windows 6.1.

I have the 16GB O2. It has 256 MB for Program RAM with 35.84 available; 220 is in use with about half reserved. The 16GB seems to refer to "My Storage".

Thanks for the reply. I expected as much, but thought it'd be no harm to ask in case the more expensive model might have a different spec and more than just extra storage.

Main storage is listed as 512 MB on mine, with about 70% Reserved, another 20% or so In Use and 45.8 MB Free. Do models with more My Storage get more Main Storage, or just the same 512 MB? My 1956.00 MB of My Storage space shows about a quarter as Reserved and a tenth as In Use, with 1265.53 MB Free.

(I have a 16 GB micro-SD card in the device for storage, so wish the Omnia had more in the way of RAM.)

I have main storage 512 MB; Program RAM 256 MB; My Storage 15676 MB. Only have a 2GB card on board because that seems to be all I need right now.

Hope this helps. I don't run a lot of programs in the background and find since I installed the SDK updates the phone is ... different. The accelerometer and the screen seem more responsive.

This is an ongoing concern at MoDaCo. A user there created a cab that does a pile of tweeks including one to reduce background app killing. Check the cab from Delvius http://www.modaco.com/content/i8000-verizon-sch-i920-omnia-ii-http-i8000-modaco-com/300983/registry-tweaker-updated-01-02-2009/

You need net 3.5 installed and running.

Having tried the cab from Delvius I can't say I've noticed much difference. I've been using a HTC HD mini for much of the past eight months as well. It seems to cope way better with having loads of things running in the background. It does sometimes hang when attaching a picture to a tweet in Panoramic's moTweets Twitter client, but that's about the only problem I've had with the HD mini. I wish the Omnia II was as reliable. I did find that using it for uploading photos to TwitPic using moTweets on a holiday last year worked pretty well, as long as I had no other programmes running. The hardware "shutter-release" button and camera software make the Omnia II the better choice for photos.
