HOW TO:  Add a picture of your Omnia to WMDC

Hey guys.  For those of you who currently use Windows Vista then you most likely use Windows Mobile Device Center as your portal for ActiveSync.  If you notice when you connect your device there is an image of a phone on the left hand side of a smart phone.

For me personally it annoyed me because it did not resemble the Omnia whatsoever.  I decided to figure out how to change that image so it shows a picture of the phone instead.  Here is my guide on how to do this for those of you who don't know already.  It's very simple when you have the right way.  I spent awhile doing different things before it finally worked.  Here ya go.

Step One: Download the attatched "sync.ico" file at the bottom of this post.  Place it somewhere on your computer.  This icon file contains an image of the Samsung Omnia i900* which is identical to the i910 as well.  It can be used for both.

Step Two: Connect your device to your computer via ActiveSync and load up Windows Mobile Device Center.  Select the File Explorer option and browse to the /Windows folder on your phone and copy the sync.ico to this folder.  If you cannot see the Windows folder on your computer then go to 'Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab' and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and also UNCHECK the box next to "Hide protected operating system files".

Step Three:  After you have successfully copied the sync.ico file to your Omnia's Windows folder you must now disconnect the phone from the computer.  Now in Windows go to 'Start > Control Panel > Device Manager' and click the "+" icon next to 'Portable Devices' to drop down the list. You should see an entry labeled something similar to Pocket PC or Smartphone**.  Right-Click on this and select "Uninstall".  Click OK and allow the computer to uninstall the device.  You might see a check box that says "Remove Device Drivers".  If you do just leave it unchecked because it doesn't matter.

Step Four:  After the device is uninstalled wait about 30-60 seconds and then re-connect your phone to the computer via ActiveSync.  Windows will recognize the phone and start reinstalling the drivers for it.  Once it completes this you should now be able to run Windows Mobile Device Center and see a picture of your Omnia on the left side.  HOORAY!  You can see a picture of the final result attached below.  Hope you like it!

    * If you own a different phone or mobile device other than the Omnia and would like to have a sync.ico file just leave a request below and I will see what I can do.

** Just in case some of you don't know how to change the device name you can simply go to "My Computer" in Windows and right-click on the device and go to "Rename".  I liked having it say "Samsung Omnia i910" rather than "Chris's Smartphone".  Looks better this way.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial.  Please give me cookies!!! I'm hungry.  Smiley

At night I cannot sleep.  Forcefully and constantly researching and updating my phone.  Searching for that next big update.  Sometimes life completely revolves around my Omnia.

I am an insOMNIAC.

Neat little how to there... I'll have to play around with it this weekend.

I was cracking up at the end where you talk about renaming the phone from "Chris's Smartphone".. I thought maybe you were looking over my shoulder since that's my name too!! LOL!

Thanks mate it works well, but the only thing was even though I turned on Show hidden files and folders in the control panel I still couldn't see the windows folder there!!.

So I just put the sync.ico file into my device then disconnected the phone and copy the file into the windows folder from there.

Thanks Brendan

Yea you can replace the .ico file with any other .ico file but it works best if it's formatted to the right size and stuff.  What else did you have in mind?  A different device or just a different photo of the Omnia?

Okay well I think I know what is wrong.  In Folder Options there are two selections.  One is called "Show Hidden Files and Folders" which will just show regular files with hidden selected in the properties and there is another option called "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".  You have to uncheck that option as well to make the Windows folder appear.  Hope that helps!
