It seems that the Omnia does not auto-detect-and-connect to known Wi-Fi networks after re-starting.  This is terribly frustrating around home and work where I have readily accessible wireless networks available yet I have to remember to turn ON my Wi-Fi everytime after my phone has been shut down in order to re-connect to those networks (ie. after re-starting Wi-Fi defaults to OFF).  I often forget and end up using my 3G wireless data-plan completely unnecessarily.

I know my spouse's Blackberry Bold auto-detects and connects to our Wi-Fi networks anytime (Wi-Fi is always ON unless we tell it otherwise).  Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the Omnia that can / will be modified in the future (perhaps with a firmware upgrade)?

Perhaps Wi-Fi defaulting to "OFF" was done intentionally in order to save battery life for those that don't have it.  But for those of us who do have it (and use it regularly), this is a real pet-peeve.

Perhaps your currently set to turn off wi-fi if it's not connected for a while...

Main Menu | Settings | COnnections | Wi-Fi | Menu | Advanced
"turn off wi-fi if not connected in:"

thanks demort - unfortunately, that isn't it: I have this option set to "never" turn off wi-fi

Sadly, I think this is just a default setting that Samsung stuck us with - hopefully this is something they can make optional one day through a firmware upgrade
