Here is a nice tidbit to read:

Samsung Android phones set for summer 2009
19 DEC 2008
Android
The Samsung Omnia's set for an Android makeover
It seems Google Android is most definitely set to take over the world in 2009. With Sony Ericsson confirming their plans for a high–end handset toting the mobile OS next year, Samsung has just come out and said it's got something similar up its sleeve.

The Koreans will be bringing souped–up version of the touchscreen Omnia out by June 2009, putting it right up against the power of the T–Mobile G1 and whatever Sony Ericsson has shovelled with Android goodies.

At the moment, details remain somewhat thin on the ground, but from the looks of it, Mobile World Congress in February will be chock full of Android phones just waiting to change the way we use our mobiles.

We'll be keeping our ears to the ground for more news as we get it. But while you wait, make sure you get up to speed with Google's OS in our handy guide and check out our hands–on video of the T–Mobile G1.

Do you own an Omnia? Funny how Windows haters always voice their hate for "Anything Windows" but they are always at sites where the OS discussed, used, etc.. is...you guessed it, Windows! While people who don't care much for the Mac OS don't really feel the need to smash the Apple every chance they get. In the end, we all have our favorites.

Now having said that^^ I'm willing to look into the phones' OS see if it is as versatile as WinMo. I've read it wasn't. I admit I know nothing about Android.

yes i own an omnia. i also have a dual boot with vista and fedora. and ive had a dual boot of xp and fedora. im not out to bag things without trying it 1st. Which is why i cant say anything about apple os's as ive never used any.
The only things im not a fan about the omnia itself is there is no physical keyboard (yes i was aware of this before i bought it. (Personal preference)) and the fact that to get decent programs for it you need to pay. great phone otherwise. if there turns out to be a way to put android into it ill replace winmo instantly. again, personal preference. Well technically, smart phones are business phones. They evolved from the PDA. Which I'm sure you know. However, because they are so versatile, and hackable, non business folks are drawn to them. A business person can write off the purchases, or the company that they work for does. But there are a ton of free apps, and a lot of them are really good. Even the iPhones better apps cost money. Again knowing what you're buying is key.

It's like buying a sports car and then complaining about the insurance, and gas mileage. Sounds like the G-1 from T-Mobile would have been better for you. I researched the phone and found it lacking on many fronts. Plus it's ugly and feels cheap. I'm blathering now. It's good when we can agree to disagree.

The G1 is known as the HTC Dream here. they only just got released. This is the phone that my brother has picked up. i do like it. the keyboard is easy to use and android is really nice. the camera could have been a little bigger and yea ill agree with you, its not the best looking phone out there.
i love your analogy on the sports car though. ive got that sports car that uses a lot of fuel, costs an arm and a leg to maintain and the insurance kills me every year. yet i love it and its worth every cent.
dont get me wrong, i do like my omnia. it does everything i want my phone to do and a bit more. if only it were more finger friendly and didnt need a soft reset every day

With the exception of having to Soft Reset everyday, I'm in agreement. Funny about the Car. But if it floats your boat, thats all that matters. With me it's my hobby that drains my account. RC Planes.

I really really want Android on my existing Omnia. In order to get developers a bit more motivated we're putting some money together with some people for the first person that manages to get android running on the Samsung Omnia..

Have a look here: www.AndroidOmnia.com and contribute if you're also interested!    Smiley

Of yeah, and tell your friends..  Smiley

IMHO you cant really bash winmo too much (or windows in general), the only times i have ever had to reset the phone was when a 3rd party program crashed. On the same hand i have been on the same install of Vista on my laptop for 2 years, no problems at all. (unless of course i caused them.. haha)

I agree it can be difficult to find "good" programs but hopefully that will change soon with Microsoft and a few others opening app stores for winmo.

I'd give andriod a shot, but as Doppelganger said, the G1 to me seems to be a crappy phone, and those guys complain of lockups and having to reset the phone at least as much as people here do.

I'd really love a unix-based OS, that would be sweet!

Then I could play around with my computers thru SSH and such, it would be awesome acctually to be able for exemple to logon to my webhotel and download the files that need to get updated and make changes from the phone  Shocked

I don't think windows is a bad OS, but I feel limited and restricted when using it, currently i'm on a Vista Ultimate, I got 100 gig partition and about 5-10 dists on my harddrive, and ubuntu installed on it (using dual boot), also got a macbook with leopard and CentOS installed with help of bootcamp.

Btw, my favorite OS is for sure Leopard 10.5, linux is fun and has no restrictions, yes... But I hate working with it for longer periods when making webpages etc..
