Shokka9,

I got a Samsung Omnia 8Gb in January from eBay, and looking at Version, it came up with the following:

VERSION
     PDA: i900DTHJ5/DTHJ5
     PHONE: i900XXHJ1

The packaging pointed towards a Vodafone phone from Greece, and but it did not look as though it had been used. However, based on research on this website, it looks as though the ROM has been upgraded to the "Australian one".

I am based in the UK and am a Vodafone customer, and would like to upgrade to the official firmware upgrade. When l use the samsung omnia website, it says that my version is incorrect.

What would happen to my phone if l upgraded to a UK official ROM? e.g.

               http://samsungmobile.com/promotion/omnia/uk/vodafone/vodafone.jsp

and if something did go wrong - how would l get back to what l previously had?

Regards,

Sukhster

To download that update, you need to put ACHH1 into the website.

Nothing will happen to your Omnia, just have voda branding..

To get it back to that (current) state, should be easy, i think that ROM is available somewhere.

You will need to either hex-edit your current version, so that the official update will take to your Omnia or do some key codes to get same result..

see here....

Enjoy.

Shokka9,

Many thanks. Exactly what l needed to know. I was thinking of trying to get the latest official version of the software on the device, and hopefully correct some of the freezing that occurs on the device.

I have followed your posts on the site with interest.

In your opinion, what is more actively developed and stable? The official firmware, or some of the custom firmware out there?

Additionally, if you go for the custom firmware - can you revert back to the official version via hex-edit/ key codes?

Yes Yes...(hello)

Well to be honest, brutally, if your firmware is branded by your operator (voda and wot not) then your firmware wont be as good as say non branded version. In non branded (unofficial/beta/test/leaked/your word) ROM nobody else has played with it and forced rubbish in your face. My phone is not for my operator to market themselves at me 24hrs a day. Also, they obviously play with other stuff too (verizon users feel it most i think). The turn it into their ROM really, not Samsungs.

We use those unbranded ROMs to make better, worse, smaller, larger, whatever we like. I have never had any buggy issues like i did when i was on branded HH1 firmware, it lasted 2 weeks, which was probably too long.

Straight to custom ROMs. They work as they should, no interferences. Some minor bugs (depends on build of base ROM).

My phone works everyday all day, no issues, flashed it over 100 times, easy. Dont get me twisted, i always thinking the worst. But not happened. If it does, it will be handset issue, not firmware (he says).

Lots of other users agree, goto modaco, sgmobiles, here, there, everywhere.

If you need to go back to official wares, it is possible, but will need some attention (just research and to follow instructions in right order) It can and has been done. I never done it, no need to, i cook my ROMs, nothing better than using your own. If its wrong fix it.

If you are happy with your existing setup, then dont update for fun, no point, you will or may not like what you get.

Always read threads thru to thru to the end in forums. you could find something really important at the end

good luck.

You got me sold on custom builds. I need to upgrade since my Opera keeps on causing my phone to lock, and l need to soft reset to get it started again. Additionally, my battery life is pretty poor.

What would you recommend as the most stable and new ROM upgrade from:

VERSION
     PDA: i900DTHJ5/DTHJ5
     PHONE: i900XXHJ1

?

... l am real newbie to Samsung firmware, so l really apologise for the dumb questions.

You need to spend some time surfing the net dude..

theres lots out there and all for different tastes....its all about preference and style or ease of use, you need to find out what you need or want from the Omnia.

Goto modaco.com (google it with Omnia to get started) look here (my kitchen) or the list of roms i made.

Too many choices to say go for this.. i would say anything HK3 and above, HL2 got new stuff (wigets, new bell vol controller), but all similar, just fixed (apparently) bugs..

you decide...take the path....qbus, sector, shokka9, many others....

 :)Hello Shoka9,
a little patience please because I'm a grey surfer and not very computer literate.
My Omnia gives version BOHH5. It is branded Tmobile, bought in Gibraltar, and I am in Italy.
As others have found, having difficulty finding where to upgrade firmware. With this version number, do I need to? and where do I go?
many thanks,

You need to upgrade as HH ROMs are pretty crap. In fact fairly rubbish all round (sorry).

T-mobile have not issued an official update and i dont think they will be.

So unfortunately for you, your only options are custom ROMs...

So please take the time to surf the forums, and check my links here in the ROM discussion area so you can decide (if you want) which ROM would suit you.

My kitchen has a selection of ROMs for you to use...

Before updating to any ROM, please read my 'how to use a custom ROM' thread.
