DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

It's recommended that you do a hard reset before attempting this
Be aware this may void your warranty

Here's the instructions on how to flash your phone to the leaked ROM which unlocks GPS on the Verizon Omnia i910 and allows you to use any of the cooked i910 ROM's.

As of 7/16/2009 there was an offical ROM release from Verizon/Samsung.  Unless you have a specific need for this ROM there is NO LONGER any reason to install it as Verizon has fulfilled their promise to unlock our GPS.  Please visit the Verizon website site to obtain your copy of the update tool.

Instructions have been updated to include Vista and simplification, original source was idoctor.org, but they can easily extracted from the PDF attached below.

I nor anyone else is in any way responsible for damaged hardware through this process. PLEASE DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. Chances are any questions you have are already answered in this thread, try reading Wink.

First off you'll want to make sure you download the Samsung UMDL utility which is available at the bottom of this post.  And also be sure to download the leaked ROM.  I try to keep this link updated, if it's dead please don't cry about it - I'll get around to finding another link.

Before Starting
  • Make SURE that you have USB2.0 ports on your computer and that you flash using those.  Many users have reported bricks using USB1.1 standards.
  • Have at the very least a 50% charge on your battery (preferably 100%) as losing power midflash with almost guarantee a bricked phone.
  • Do not attempt if your phone is overheated, let it cool first.
  • Backup all of your contacts and stuff because they will be deleted.
  • Most importantly FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!

Step 1: Uncheck "Allow USB Connections" in Connection Settings for ActiveSync if using Windows XP. If you're using Vista you can find this setting in Windows Mobile Device Center -> Mobile Device Settings -> Connection Settings.

Step 2: On you phone go to Start -> Settings -> Connections -> USB Connection Mode -> Change from "ActiveSync" to "Mass Storage" -> Click OK.  Now power and unplug your Omnia for now.

Step 3: Start Samsung Omnia UMDL on your PC

Step 4: Click "Unified Image File (*.img)" and browse to where you saved the ROM file. (i910WM6.1.REV10.CC20.VZW.img)

Step 5: Click "DETECT"

Step 6: Attach your i910 to the USB Cable (Make sure it's off!)

Step 7: Now that it's plugged in, power it on.

Step 8: Your i910 should now be detected. You can verify this just by watching the "Downloading Log".

Step 9: After the flash is complete (In UMDL Device 1 will read "Job Done.  Launched!) your i910 will automatically restart it's self and boot into WinMo Setup.

Step 10: To active the GPS Go to Start -> Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> "Services" tab -> GPS -> Change Setting from "911 Only" to "Location On" -> OK.  Wait 20 seconds, and soft reset.

Some of the new features included in this ROM
Quote
*GPS Unlocked!
*Overall performance increase.
*5% battery increments! (In Easy Settings only)
*Smart Memo
*Dice
*Favorite Settings, now known as Easy Settings
*New widgets. Easier to move around, can remove from list. Weatherbug, WL search added.
*Windows Live
*Text Message Retry
*Dialer Touch Lock Settings-Off, 2s, 5s, 10s.
*Disable Threaded Text Messaging via System Settings
*Sharper fonts.
*iPhone-esque popup keyboard keys.
*Better kinetic scrolling in Samsung apps.
*Samsung Volume Control

If you're having problems with Google Maps still after this update try this

Go to -> Menu -> select Use GPS

Go to -> Menu -> Options -> Gps Settings... -> choose Set Manually -> select COM8 -> select 57600 -> OK

You should now be able to use Google Maps with GPS enabled!!  Give it a few minutes outside to establish a sat link.

*****

How to get "External GPS" to show up in settings in new rom:
Perform this registry change
HKLM-> Control Panel-> GPS Settings-> delete "Redirect"-> soft reset

The ROM can be downloaded from (Link updated 7:45 EST 5/27/2009)

Well it imaged properly and booted back up as if I had done a hard reset.  I'm still adding all my apps back, just synched up my contacts/calendar etc.  And I made a call so it still works Smiley  I should be done with all my installs in the next few minutes, then I get to go outside for the google maps test!

I need to make sure that wireless sync works as well as the camera. If i can get the gps to work with the camera we should be able to geo tag our pics.

I know this is a lot but i CANNOT lose any functionality of my phone

It works!! Just got a fix on my location in Google Maps in about 30 seconds standing out on my porch.

@knotbeerdan:  I am able to verify the camera is working flawlessly and saving the pictures appropritately.  I'm unable to verify the wireless synching for you because I sync via USB cable, but I do know that the WiFi is functioning properly as is my bluetooth headset.  So I would imagine that your wireless synching will be fine.

Below is a link to the instructions I used, linked on the right are the new ROM, the omnia imaging tool (UDML_OMNIA.exe) and a the pdf that goes along with it.

http://theidoctor.org/omnia.html

The instructions are optimized for XP it seems, but I had no problem doing this in Vista.  Please make sure to read the instructions thoroughly before attempting this (they're pretty short) and give it a go!  Also, this WILL erase everything stored on the device so please back up all your data as you would before a hard reset.

thank you so much for letting me know about this. I know a lot of people are wondering about this kind of stuff so now i hope this thread will help them out too. I think i will give this a go.

Another way to make sure to not lose any apps is to save the install files to the Micro card. Then on the Hard reset you have all your info saved on the card. And with the wireless Sync once you sync back up you immediately get your contacts/calander and any notes that may be saved in your outlook.

Just a heads up for those of you that may not know this stuff.

Also.. is it just me or just this ROM seem to speed up the general operation of the phone significantly?  Programs seem to be opening much faster than usual.

Haven't used it myself but you can try this

Quote
Description:
The PIM backup application is a tool that allows to backup/restore personal information stored on windows mobile based pocket devices. Concerning the personal information, it refer to contacts, appointments, tasks, messages, calls,...

The backup is totally independent of the version of Windows Mobile running on the device and independent of the device itself. The backup is also independent of the language used on the device. You can easily backup on a Chinese device and restore in a German one.

There are two kinds of backups. The binary based backup has been implemented in order to have a backup/restore process which is fast and more reliable, the disadvantage being that the backup contents cannot be easily modified or viewed. The text based backup has been implemented in order to see/edit the contents on a pc for instance.

For users with Windows Mobile 2003 SE, please download this software here (169 KB) or its miror here.

Use notice:
The exe contained in the zip file, should be copied and launched on the Pocket PC, and not on a PC.

TODO:
MMS Backup/restore doesn't work!

- Fix problem with MMS "attachments" which are stored on disk but are not considered as attachments in the cemail.vol (wonderful!). Arcsoft MMS software uses own-defined properties (blobs) in pmailMsgs table in cemail.vol but I cannot decipher them for the moment.
- Conversion of text backups <-> binary backups.
- Conversion to other known formats (icalendar,...).

Features:
- Backup/restore appointments.
- Backup/restore call logs.
- Backup/restore contacts.
- Backup/restore messages (SMS, Mails, ...) NEW !!!.
- Backup/restore speed dials.
- Backup/restore tasks.
- Backup/restore custom files.

Restore contacts:
It is possible now to restore a text file containing contacts backed up from other applications, like in Outlook Express, the only constraint is that the first line should contain the fields and the fields need a separator. (See screenshots). The tool allows to map default fields to fields found in the file. It is possible now to insert duplicates.

Backup messages:
The mail database is completely parsed to retrieve all the messages stored in every directory and subdirectory. It is possible to select which account and directories should be backed up. You can save attachments as well if they exist on the Pocket PC.

Restore messages:
Same as the backup, you can select which account and directories should be restored to the device. Caution, if an account doesn't exist on the Pocket PC, this application will discard the messages that belong to that account.

Schedule backup:
It is possible to schedule a backup, each day of the week and this at a specific hour. If the Pocket PC is suspended, it will wake up and do the backup. You can eventually control the number of backups to keep and switch off the Pocket PC after the scheduled backup is finished.
The schedule backup creates a notification that can be cleared via the Options Menu.

File types:
There is only one file type now, which is .pib (Personal Information Backup), in fact it is just a zip file (so you can open it with a zip application) which contain the different text files used in PPCBckpContacts, so you can still extract these files, edit them and eventually restore them without putting them back in the .pib file.

Thanks for the suggestion. Im just going through manually with my mobiler and backing up my music and whatnot. For my contacts and stuff i use wireless sync for my work e-mail. That backs all that stuff up for me.

Just want to make sure about a couple of things.
I have applications like Iconsoft PhoneEX, S2U2.
Will they still work with the new ROM?

Also,
I have other applications where I put the installs CABs on the "My Storage" RAM in my phone.
I have music and pictures there too.
I'm assuming that a Hard Reset won't wipe out that memory.
Is that true?
Will "My Storage" remain intact after I update the ROM and Hard Reset the phone?

Thanks,
JedK

S2U2 still works, I use 1.62 and it's fine.  And no, a hard-reset/doing this does not format the "My Storage" on the phone.  I don't have PhoneEX so I can't comment on that
